Hydrogen Storage: A New Approach with Pipeline Bundles
Hydrogen is rapidly emerging as a key energy source in the transition to Net Zero. At Subsea Expo 2023, National Subsea Centre’s Research Assistant, Jemma Reynolds, shared insights on repurposing pipeline bundles for hydrogen storage. In collaboration with Cygnas Solutions, we are exploring how this existing infrastructure can be adapted for clean energy storage.
Why Hydrogen?
Green hydrogen is a clean, zero-emission fuel with potential applications across multiple industries. However, efficient and safe storage remains a challenge. This is where pipeline bundles, designed for offshore oil and gas, could provide a cost-effective solution for hydrogen storage and transportation.
Challenges of Hydrogen Storage
Despite its benefits, hydrogen storage presents hurdles such as:
Material Degradation: Hydrogen can weaken metals, increasing failure risks.
High-Pressure Sensitivity: Leaks and flammability risks rise with increased pressure.
Detection Limitations: Hydrogen is odorless and requires advanced sensors for monitoring.
Why Use Pipeline Bundles?
Pipeline bundles, already in use in offshore fields, offer:
✔ Proximity to Wind Farms – Ideal for storing excess renewable energy.
✔ Durability & Safety – Low-stress design minimizes risks of fatigue and leakage.
✔ Cost-Effective Repurposing – Existing bundles can be modified rather than scrapped, reducing costs and environmental impact.
Cygnas Solutions: Engineering the Future
With expertise in Mechanical Design, Asset Integrity, and Engineering Software, Cygnas Solutions is leading the effort to evaluate pipeline bundle repurposing for hydrogen storage. Our collaboration on this project with National Subsea Centre is essential in addressing engineering and feasibility challenges.
Project Roadmap The study key phases:
🔹 Feasibility Study – Evaluating storage potential and capacity.
🔹 Data Collection – Analyzing bundle integrity and material compatibility.
🔹 Mapping – Identifying ideal locations near offshore wind farms.
🔹 Repurposing Analysis – Assessing modifications needed for hydrogen storage.
Overcoming Challenges & Looking Ahead
Mapping offshore assets and ensuring material compatibility remain challenges, but initial findings suggest that pipeline bundles can be adapted with minimal modifications. This could provide a sustainable, scalable storage solution for hydrogen.
