Unlocking the Future of Clean Energy: Key Insights from the Hydrogen Innovation Conference

I recently attended the Hydrogen Future Conference, and as an invited panellist to discuss hydrogen’s role in the clean energy landscape. While hydrogen offers immense promise, a number of panellists highlighted ongoing challenges: it remains one of the most expensive ways to store and transport energy. The key hurdles include production, transportation, storage, and cost, with most projects reliant on government subsidies and local support to remain viable.

Overall, there was optimism in the air. Technological improvements in electrolysers, fuel cells, and storage systems are helping to lower costs and increase efficiency. While government support remains crucial, these innovations could make hydrogen more financially viable in the future. Hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors like heavy transportation and industry is undeniable. As production costs drop, hydrogen could become a major player in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

No matter how we look at it, the future energy requirements for the globe will far exceed that which can be provided by hydrocarbons alone. With the increasing use of AI which requires massive data centres fuelled by the reduction in cost of compute power, the global demand for energy will increase massively.

The conference left me hopeful. Hydrogen is on the cusp of becoming a transformative energy solution.
